I've recently started using ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32bit on my computer, the graphics card of which is an old Ati Radeon x800 pro. I tried to install its video driver provided my amd which I downloaded from this link: =English
X800 Pro Driver Download
After googling the error I figured out that the version of ubuntu I have does not support this version of the driver, despite the fact that it is provided by AMD for linux x86! I am not sure about the above conclusion of mine, so I would like to hear your opinion before I go searching for open source drivers If you have any suggestions please go on.
Please use the proprietary drivers provided by Ubuntu's driver installer. If there are none, probably because that card is rather old and I remember reading that support for this series has been dropped some time ago, then remove possibly installed drivers and packages. Ubuntu should then default back to the open source drivers.
As opposed to the GeForce 6 series, ATI did not choose to support Shader Model 3 but is compatible up-to model 2.0b, this actually saves them quite a few transistors making the graphics core less expensive. The lack of Shader model 3 has widely been debated, personally I would have loved to see it included on the x800 series, current games however hardly support it just yet (with the exception of Far Cry with the v1.2 patch). Differences will be mostly seen in performance increases. There will be several titles coming out that support Shader Model 3, among them are: Lord of the Rings; Battle for Middle-Earth, Stalker, Vampire: Bloodlines, Splinter Cell X, Driver 3, Grafan, Painkiller and much more...
The product that we are testing today is the Radeon x800 XL from HiS. The Radeon x800 XL is ATI's new high-end product yet within that segment on the lower and thus more affordable section. A product developed under codename R430 and built on the smaller 0.11 micron fabrication process.
The product was made for the PCI-Express platform yet expect a (bridged) AGP version out in retail soon also. The x800 XL my friends is a product that I like very much. Next to all the specifications HiS will bring you value in the form of options. We opted for the IceQ II version, that means a huge, yet very silent cooling and additional iTurbo overclocking software that makes the product run faster with the push of a button. Of course we'll explain all the features in this review, but I'm trying to round out the introduction here!
One more thing, though it's reasonably affordable and it'll offer you a tremendous amount performance, it's hard to determine what exactly you are buying these days. To understand where this product exactly is performance wise the best way to explain it is to look at a small overview on the remarkable amount of x800/x850 there currently are on the market versus their primary specifications.

How to Install Drivers Once you download your new driver, then you need to install it. To install a driver in Windows, you will need to use a built-in utility called Device Manager. It allows you to see all of the devices recognized by your system, and the drivers associated with them.
Many device drivers are not updated through the Microsoft Windows Update service. If you are having trouble finding the right driver, stop searching and fix driver problems faster with the Automatic Driver Update Utility. Automatic updates could save you hours of time.
The Driver Update Utility automatically finds, downloads and installs the right driver for your hardware and operating system. It will Update all of your drivers in just a few clicks, and even backup your drivers before making any changes.
Many computer problems are caused by missing or outdated device drivers, especially in Windows 11. If your desktop or laptop is running slow, or keeps crashing or hanging, there is a good chance that updating your drivers will fix the problem.

I've built a retro Win98 (with XP in dual boot) computer consisting of a Pentium 4 Northwood 3.4GHz, Asus P4P800 motherboard and 1GB of Corsair DDR400 ram )soon to be 2GB after reading posts here on 98's ram limit and successfully testing with a friends 2GB DDR. Of course the 2GB will be useful when booting into XP, the current graphic card is an AGP ATI 9800 pro 128MB and this series of cards were the last from ATI with Win98 driver support.
However, having owned essentially this spec of computer when it was cutting edge years and years ago and using an ATI X800 replacing an ATI 9800 that made a big difference for what I do in XP, I'd like to do the same again but have the card work properly in my now well tuned and refined Win98SE install ... I've read about hacked drivers where you simply add an entry for the card driver somewhere? would this work OK or is it a clumsy not worthwhile workaround?
The ATi Catalyst 6.2 drivers are the last official ones for Windows 98. Although ATi's driver search for 98/ME will not lead you to it, this driver package contains drivers for the X800 series up to the X800 XT Platinum Edition. I have not used these myself, so I cannot vouch for their operability.
I've done a Google search for ATI X800/X850 card drivers already and have downloaded what is supposed to be working drivers for this series of cards, but as of yet I've not bought another ATI X800/X850 card to test, am patiently watching UK Ebay for a decent low priced one, some folk are asking silly money for the older AGP versions I need! 2ff7e9595c
